Sandering is an iconic oceanfront, luxury resort in the community of Duck on the North Carolina barrier islands known at the Outer Banks.
The Sanderling is remote enough for blessed isolation and old-fashioned solitude, yet it’s the first and only AAA Four-Diamond resort on the Outer Banks. Plus, there's plenty to do just up the road at Corolla on the Currituck Outer Banks, or down the road in communities like Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills (made famous by the Wright Brothers) and Nags Head.
The spa is located across the street from the main resort, but your easy walk over is rewarded when you see that the spa overlooks picturesque Currituck Sound. The sunsets here are amazing, too. One evening, he watched the sky change while dozens of swans floated peacefully on waters surrounding Sanderling’s romantic gazebo.
Entering spa reception, we were met by a large retail space. Just beyond it is the nail salon, where Kathy added an impromptu manicure after our massages. They easily accommodated the request. The pedicure chairs are regal and comfy
The couple’s massage room was roomy and welcoming with a large soaking tub and the his-and-her massage tables. The blue walls accented with white plantation shutters was reminiscent of a Carolina blue sky full of clouds. The beautiful sand-colored hardwood floors added to that coastal feel.
The nautical color scheme is carried out in the relaxation area. as well, with cushioned wicker chairs sporting blue-and-white throw pillows, all beneath a ceiling level canvas umbrella bringing the beach vibe indoors.
One wall features a huge seashell under glass; another has a seashell sconce lighting atop a framed seascape. The tiled changing/locker rooms has the same clean feel with sand-and-white colors plus earthtone granite counters.
Our Swedish Couple’s Massage in that lovely couples room was well performed by masseuses Shelley and Patricia. They coordinated their movements well, working in sync on the two of us, giving good relief to our aching muscles. We hung out post-massage, in a separate, waiting area for two, just off the treatment room.
Staff delivered us a celebratory split of champagne and some artistic chocolates for the perfect end to a good spa experience. That room’s cream-and-gray striped cushiony loungers had throws for covering up, and the wall’s white beadboarding further fit the beachy décor.
And, if you have the energy, just steps away is the indoor pool.
